Ethan Winters Letter

Dear Ethan,

You have taught me that even being a normal person in an impossible situation isn't exactly hopeless. Well... I don't particularly agree with you going to a remote place for your wife who had been missing for three years after she literally told you not to come. But I guess that's really a testament to how much you cared and how far you were willing to go for someone you loved.

I really like people like you because they show that anything is possible if you have enough drive, enough passion, and enough will to just survive.

Watching you also made me wonder something. Is it harder to take the first step, or is it harder to keep going?

You took the first step the moment you drove to Louisiana. But I think the harder part was everything that came after. Every time you found out something worse than before, every time you got hurt, every time it looked like there was no way out, you still kept moving.

You could have easily given up halfway. You could have let someone kill you or tried to run away. Instead, you kept taking the next step, even when it didn't make sense to.

I also love when you make jokes to yourself or just talk to yourself. I genuinely think that's a way to cope. What good is it to walk around with all that mess in your head when you can let off even a little bit of steam by making a dumb joke? I'd rather do that than keep everything bottled up until I lose my mind.

And even at the very end, you gave your life to protect the people you loved. That wasn't because you were the strongest person in the room. It was because you never stopped moving forward when it mattered.

I think that's why you're one of my favorite Resident Evil characters. Not because you're some legendary soldier, but because you're just a regular guy who refused to quit.
